The unmarried women have the right to be a mother. The news (2009, reported on Lihpao news) talks about that unmarried women face the restriction which makes them unable to have their own babies. In the news, the director of the Awakening Foundation points out that government should loosen the Artificial Reproduction Act.
According to the Artificial Reproduction Act (人工生殖法) (2007, released by The of the Legislative Yuan of Republic of China), now the technique of artificial insemination is only allowed to use on the married couple suffer from sterility(不孕症), and it is specific to the couple that involves a man and a woman. Therefore, other kinds of people such as homosexual couples, and also, the unmarried women who want to have her own babies, are excluded by the law.
It is not easy for unmarried women to be a mother in Taiwan. If they choose to be pregnant via artificial insemination, they need to spend a lot of money and go to other countries, because unmarried women are not allowed to use the technique of artificial insemination. However, even though they want to adopt a child, they will be estimated by the social workers from the adoption organization strictly, and finally they are still not allowed to adopt the child because of the reason that they are unmarried.

No Men, but Babies?

楊慈郁. (November, 21,2010). News. (Original from Chinatimes.com)

In the past, people have the concept that women need to rely on the ability of men to survive. The duty of women is to take care of the family, that is to say, their social character is become a wife and mother. However, nowadays there is a group of women who are over thirty years old, independent, and not willing to get married yet, they may not want to have a husband, but they have the desire to have a baby.
Do unmarried women have the right to have babies via artificial insemination? According to the survey (2010, reported on Chinatimes.com) last year, people are discussing that there are 2322 participants being asked this question, 46.1% of them think that these women also have the right to be the mother, 37.3% of them think that there will have problems if children have no father.
Even though a woman chooses to be unmarried, she may still have the desire to become a mother. The most important reason why unmarried old lady want to have babies is because after thirty years old, the condition of women’s fertility will become worse than before, and it will be difficult for them to have babies when they are getting older. Even though they are pregnant, they may have more risk than other young expectant mothers through the process of pregnancy. They want to have their own children calling them mother, but they don’t want the constraint of marriage. Therefore, they want to be pregnant by means of artificial insemination by donor.
Recently in Taiwan, the fertility rate keeps going down, some reports claim that it is related to women who get married late or don’t want to get married. It is also a reason why people used to think that unmarried women are the “loser”, because people have the idea that women’s duty is to become a wife and a mother. However, things are change; women now also have the ability to work and not necessarily need to rely on the care of men.
Opponents think it is not fair to the children. In the conventional concept most of people may think general family involves a father, mother and their children. But if an unmarried woman wants to have the baby via artificial insemination by donor, there may be no father in this family. The children will have the love from mother, but will lack of the love from father. Arguing on this point, the supporter claims that even in a family with father, if the father abuse the child, the situation will not better than only have a mother. On the other hand, the divorce rate in this society becomes higher and higher, children may suffer lots of hurt from the separating of their parents. Also, to stay single is not an unchangeable condition, maybe the women will finally find her ideal mate in the future.
As a result, if an unmarried woman has the ability to take care of her children by herself, and she wants to be the mother, giving her love to her baby, it is a good way to fulfill her life as a woman. Moreover, it also can enhance the fertility rate at the same time.

Reflection 1

Reflection 1
After doing the annotations, there are some problems showing up. The biggest problem of my paper is that there is no controversial issue. Singles can be both genders, and it’s hard to write that which age can be defined as single. I am doing about the issue of the singles, but it is too broad to be discussed. I don’t actually focus on small topic; teacher says that I am just on the surface and not pointing out the question, and there are too many things in my papers. I haven’t find out a real point to discuss yet. I’ve been confused for a long time, and thinking about the question. At that time, I am really confused because I am lost. I don’t know which way I can keep heading to. Later I try to emphasize my topic on the unmarried women rather than singles of both genders. But the problem is still there. At the meeting teacher asks me that why people want to have the marriage, and I confess that I don’t know the reason actually. First, I have no experience of getting married, and second, there may be thousands of answers why people make this decision. It is hard to discuss why a woman wants to get married or not, because it is about the personal choice. Honestly, after the meeting, I start to consider whether I need to do the whole topic again, that is, change a new one.

In the end, I choose to put the emphasis on the unmarried women because of teacher’s advice rather than change a new one. Searching the information and the news, I find out that there is news which discusses “Do unmarried women have the right to have babies via artificial insemination?” No matter being approval or disapproval, both sides of people have their own reasons. Some people think that all the women have the right to be a mother, even though they choose to be whether married or not. But the other side of people thinks that the children may have the questions, for example, why others have fathers but they don’t? Also, they think that it will cause some influence on the children, because there is no father. Can women really take over the character of men? In the past time, people will think that becoming mother and wife is women’s duty. But now, modern women have their own sense, they may not want to be restrict by the marriage, and they think that they have the ability to take care of themselves, even their own children. As a result, I want to narrow to this topic, and keep doing my paper. In the beginning, I am just writing about the singles, but it seems no issue in it. My issue is going to be focused on the discussing that whether modern women can live without men or not.

Revised Annotation (2)

---
1. I change the title of the article for the sake of explaining the annotation directly.
2. I rewrite the introduction of male chauvinism into a simple way.
3. I read the comments and try to explain more completely.
---
Male Chauvinism Makes General People Think Males Are Superior to Females
Male Chauvinism influences people’s concept of thinking about different gender of singles. The terms we call the single man is eligible bachelor. However, when it comes to single women, people may think of the terms like the old maid and spinsters. The former gives us such an attractive impression of male, and the latter, however, make us think of an old lady who is odd and lonely. Compare these two impression, male seems to be better than female, and that is an outcome which cause by the concept of Male Chauvinism.

The idea of male chauvinism is that males have the sense that they are superior to females. It used to be described a person’s extreme patriotism, and later turned to be a negative description that men think their status is higher than women in the society. In the past, our society is dominated by the concept of male chauvinism that women are thought to be subordinate of men. Because in most of the family, it is always the father who goes out and works hard for earning his family. The one who owns the economic power of the family plays the dominated character in it. As time goes by, people get used to this pattern.

Take this mother’s feeling as an example, she says that she feels strange when she receives a post from her daughter’s school, mentioned that parents should accompany their children to school for the first day of the classes. The school also says that both parents should come and if it is not possible, at least the father should come. Therefore, she calls into question “Why is the father so superior when it comes to choose between mother and father?

(Online Source: Why is Male Chauvinism so Prevalent? By K. reddy http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/860137/why_is_male_chauvinism_so_prevalent.html?cat=41)
(a) They also said that both parents should come and if it is not possible, at least the father should come. It appeared perfectly normal at first but after a bit of thinking I started to find some hidden meaning in it. At least father should come- is the only thing harassing me for the past week. Why is the father so superior when it comes to choose between mother and father?

In Taiwan, parent-teacher meeting is thought to be a meeting that mothers should attend. That is because our society thinks that mother is responsible for the family cares, and it is their duty to take care of children. People may have the idea that it is men who have enough ability to go to work and raise the family. However, nowadays lots of women are going out and also work hard to increase the income of family.
The concept of male chauvinism is also challenged in the issue of singles. Nowadays women have the right to receive high education as men do, and they can be independent because they have the ability to earn for living. As a result, when it comes to look for women’s mates, their targets may be higher than before. They would rather be single than marry the men who do not fit their standards. On the other hand, when males are seeking for their mates, most of them will not prefer the ladies who have better capability than they do, because they are unwilling to admit the higher and higher status and ability of women. Under this condition, modern women who especially with higher achievement will find that it is harder to search out an ideal partner. And while they are finding and waiting for their Mr. Right, their ages are also increasing at the same time.

In conclusion, people should get rid of the negative feeling of unmarried women which trigger by the male chauvinism and respect the choice of women whether they want to get married or not.
